General names
This list should be regarded as being 'in beta'. Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pronunciation still needs fine-tuning. Comments and corrections welcome.
Unlike East Asian languages, Mongolian has a good range of names referring to scolopacids. These include Хомноот khomnoot, referring to the Woodcock; Хараалж kharaalj, used for Snipe in genus Gallinago; Цууцаль tsuutsal' or Чуучил chuuchil (probably dialect), used for the Dowitchers, Godwits and Jack Snipe; Тутгалжин tutgaljin, used for the Curlews and Whimbrels; Хөгчүү khögchüü, used for the Sandpipers and Tattlers; Элсэг elseg, used for Sanderlings, Sandpipers, Stints, Knots, and Dunlins; Ноололдой noololdoi referrring to the Ruff or Reeve, and Сэлээхэй seleekhei used for the Phalaropes. There are also the terms Салалж salalj, which refers to the Jack Snipe and possibly others, and Зараг zarag, which appears to refer to the woodcock.

The list introduces several terms, not necessarily new, including Салалж salalj, Хайргач khairgach (from хайрга khairag meaning 'stone'), and Шалчиг shalchig, which appears to mean 'marsh'. Хөгчүү khögchüü has been divided into three separate names by means of suffixes. One of these names, Хөгчүүхэй khögchüükhei, originally referred to the Jack Snipe. It is not clear if the switch in meaning to the Tattlers reflects the actual linguistic situation on the ground or is merely a makeshift change adopted by ornithologists.
The division of Цууцаль tsuutsal' into two separate names is also somewhat dubious. The two names appear to be based on naturally occurring variants (compare Чуучил chuuchil above). The word is chuuchali in the traditional script. The difference between Цууцил tsuutsil and Цууцал tsuutsal is mainly perceived as a difference in the quality of the long vowel уу, (uu) which takes on a sound approaching German 'ö' in the former.
