General names
This list should be regarded as being 'in beta'. Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pronunciation still needs fine-tuning. Comments and corrections welcome.
The normal Mongolian word for the bustard is Тоодог toodog (also Тодог todog). Less common is the term Гоорвис goorvis or Гоорбис goorbis (depending on the dictionary -- strictly speaking Гоорвис goorvis is the expected form in modern Mongolian), which, however, is applied by naturalists not to the bustards but to the Honey Buzzards (genus Pernis).
The term Тоодог toodog may be related to Kazakh Дуадақ, but confirmation is needed.
Regularised names:
Under the 2007 nomenclature, in order to distinguish between genera, Тоодог toodog is used for the genus Otis and Тоодгой toodgoi for the genus Chlamydotis. The second name makes use of a common device in Mongolia, that of adding a lengthened vowel at the end of the word (e.g., see Accipitridae). The main drawback is that in everyday usage no distinction is likely to be perceived between a Тоодог toodog and a Тоодгой toodgoi.
