The Japanese name for the Sand Grouse is サケイ sa-kei, written 沙鶏 or 砂鶏, ('sand-fowl/chicken'). Etymologically, this is directly related to the Chinese term. Only Syrrhaptes paradoxus is found in Japan, and then only as a vagrant.
