General names
Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Species list may not be current. Comments and corrections welcome.
The members of this family are known a variety of names.
- The most general name is ヒタキ hitaki, written with the character 鶲. In combinations, this is generally pronounced ビタキ -bitaki. This is used for birds in the genera Phoenicurus (redstarts), Saxicola (stone chats / bush chats), Muscicapa (flycatchers), and Ficedula (flycatchers).
- Members of the genus Monticola (rock thrushes) are known as イソヒヨドリ iso-hiyo-dori 'rock bulbul' due to their superficial resemblance to the bulbuls.
- The Japanese Robin (Luscinia akahige) is known as the コマドリ koma-dori (駒鳥), supposedly because its call resembles the whinnying of a horse. Several other robins of the genus Luscinia are also called コマドリ koma-dori or ゴマ -goma (the first letter is voiced in combination).
A few birds are called by distinctive names unrelated to those of other members of the same genus.
- ムギマキ mugi-maki 'wheat-sower' (written 麦蒔き or 麦播き) is a distinctive name for the Mugimaki flycatcher (Ficedula mugimaki).
- ルリ ruri 'lapis lazuli' (written 瑠璃 or 琉璃) is used for the Blue-and-white Flycatcher (Cyanoptila cyanomelana), which is known as the オオルリ ō ruri ('large lapis lazuli'), and the Siberian Blue Robin (Luscinia cyane, which is known as コルリ ko-ruri ('small lapis lazuli').
- The Ryukyu Robin (Luscinia komadori) is known as アカヒゲ aka-hige 'red beard'.
The scientific names of Luscinia komadori and Luscinia akahige are the reverse of the Japanese names from which they are derived. This mixup is apparently due to Temminck. Ironically, the erroneous names have become quite entrenched, and the French names even take the erroneous scientific names as a basis for the official French common names.
