Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin readings reflect standard Mandarin usage; for some dialect alternative names it may be of little practical use, especially for South China. Many Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

鹟 wēng is used for the flycatchers (Muscicapinae). It usually forms part of a larger word, seldom (if ever) occurring alone.

鸲 qú is the official name given to the robins (Erithacus /Luscinia). However, the conventional, non-technical equivalent of 'robin' in Chinese is not 鴝 qú but 知更鳥 zhīgēng-niǎo 'know hours (time watches) bird'.

Popularly, 靛颏儿 diànkér is used for two types of robin, both of which are popular cage birds in China:

• 红靛颏儿 hóng diànkér 'red dianker' for Luscinia calliope
• 蓝靛颏儿 lán diànkér 'blue dianker' for Luscinia svecica.

These names are probably a corruption of 红点颏 hóng diǎn kē 'red-dot chin' and 蓝点颏 lán diǎn kē 'blue-dot chin' respectively, and it is common to see the corrected form in writing.

燕尾 yàn-wěi 'swallow-tail' is the name given to the forktails.

jí is the official name of the chats and wheatears in Mainland China. It's not clear why this has been applied to the chats; jí is traditionally an alternative form of the character 鹡 jí 'wagtail'.

The Chinese names for the Muscicapidae have largely been 'manufactured' to follow the scientific nomenclature. While the raw materials are Chinese, the system is a totally new, in many ways artificial, creation. Even the basic names are largely recent imports.

1. The character 鶲 wēng in the sense of 'flycatcher' appears to be a Japanese usage (Obunsha's Kanwa Jiten). That is, 鶲 is an old Chinese character for some unspecified kind of bird that was pressed into service to represent the Japanese word hitaki 'flycatcher' precisely because Chinese lacked an appropriate character. Chinese dictionaries carry no references to ancient usage -- 鶲 wēng is a character without a history.

2. The character 鸲 qú, officially used for the robins in both Taiwan and China, did not traditionally refer to robins. In fact, it was part of the word 鸲鹆 qúyù meaning 'myna'. The use of this character for the robins also appears to be due to Japanese, but in a roundabout way.

The Japanese names of the robins are based on the word 駒 koma meaning 'horse' or 'pony' (the left half of the character is, in fact, the character for 'horse'). The call of Erithacus akahige is said to resemble a horse's whinnying. At some stage in the late 19th/early 20th centuries, many Japanese bird names were borrowed into Chinese in their written form. One example is that of the Siberian Rubythroat Luscinia calliope, which is 野駒 no-goma (literally 'field horse') in Japanese and 野鸲 yě-qú in Chinese (as preserved in the Taiwanese name). There is one crucial difference between the two: Japanese uses 駒 'pony' and Chinese uses 鸲. The two characters are similar, except that Japanese uses the horse radical 馬 / 马 while Chinese uses the bird radical 鳥 / 鸟. Since the character 鸲 already existed in Chinese, swapping the 'bird' radical for the 'horse' radical would have made a lot of sense.

This innovation resulted in the expansion of the meaning of 鸲 to refer to a class of birds that it did not previously cover.

3. The character used on the Mainland for the stonechats, bushchats, and wheatears, 䳭, is also a modern innovation. Traditionally, this was the first character in jílíng, the Chinese name for Motacilla (wagtails), now usually written 鹡鸰. It's not clear why this was chosen for the chats and wheatears.

Among the wheatears, Oenanthe oenanthe is called the 穗䳭 suì-jí or 'grain-ear chat' in Chinese, curiously similar to English 'wheatear'. If Chinese is modelled on the English, as it seems at first glance, it is a rather misplaced borrowing. The wheatear in English was originally named not for its resemblance to a grain of wheat but for its white rump or 'white arse', which was later modified into 'wheatear'.
